Guernsey’s animal welfare charity has confirmed its commitment to its ‘big build’ project – as it reaches a significant milestone in the project.
All buildings at the GSPCA’s headquarters in St Andrew’s that were to be replaced have now been demolished.
A new Wildlife Hospital will be built in their place at the animal shelter.
The contractors have started pouring concrete in to the newly excavated foundations while ‘business as usual’ continues around them for the GSPCA’s staff and volunteers.

The charity intends to place a ‘foundation stone’ in the near future thanking key supporters who have helped make this vision a reality, said GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne.
He said that £1,500,000 of the £3,700,000 target for the big build has already been raised through donations and savings. However, he also explained that the project has encountered unexpected challenges during excavation, leading to some additional costs.
Despite this, the GSPCA remains committed to delivering a state-of-the-art facility.
“It’s incredible to see the old buildings gone and the foundations of our new Wildlife Hospital taking shape,” he said. “This is a huge moment for the GSPCA and the animals we care for. We want to thank everyone who has supported us so far. We still have a long way to go, and we’re appealing to anyone who can help—whether through donations, sponsorship, or buying a brick—to be part of this historic build. Together, we can create a shelter that’s fit for the future.”
As part of the build, the GSPCA is now exploring green energy solutions, including solar panels and air source heat pumps for the site. These additions would significantly reduce monthly electricity costs and support the shelter’s environmental goals—but they will require further funding or sponsorship, said Mr Byrne.

The build is projected to be completed by the end of next year, and the GSPCA continues to appeal for support through initiatives such as the Buy A Brick campaign, which helps fund construction and essential supplies.
