A Guernsey homelessness charity is gearing up for World Homeless Day by preparing a series of events to mark the day, next month.
At Home in Guernsey – which was established in 2024 to tackle homelessness in the island – will use the event – from 9 to 10 October – to raise awareness about the issue.
The charity’s key message will be that homelessness does not always look like people imagine, taking different forms and happening to people in different circumstances.
Charlie Cox, CEO of At Home in Guernsey, said: “World Homeless Day is an important moment to pause, reflect and talk honestly about homelessness on our island.
“Homelessness can happen to anyone, and by challenging misconceptions and starting more compassionate conversations, we can build a community where everyone has the chance to feel safe, supported and at home.”
From relationships breaking down, financial difficulties, rising housing costs, unemployment, eviction and family pressures, homelessness has no one face.
By encouraging understanding of the issues at hand, At Home in Guernsey wants to make the island a safe space for people to have open and informed conversations.
Dame Mary Perkins, Founder of Specsavers, the campaign’s lead sponsor, said: “We are hugely supportive of this campaign, as part of our ongoing support of At Home in Guernsey and many of my Guernsey colleagues are volunteering to help set things up.
“We are sure it will create greater awareness of what homelessness looks like in Guernsey as well as highlighting what support is already available and what further support is needed.”
