At least one Guernsey Deputy deleted hundreds of emails from voters – in bulk – without reading them.
Deputy George Oswald revealed his controversial “mistake” to Express on Wednesday, admitting he’d been overwhelmed by the repeated “pinging” of voters canvasing their elected representatives.
The shocking revelation came after Deputy Rob Curgenven claimed online that multiple deputies had deleted hundreds of emails.
Express asked every single Deputy, as well as Alderney’s two representatives, a simple yes or no question: Have you deleted any (1 or more) emails about GST from members of the public in the last 8 weeks?
25 responded. 15 didn’t.
We know one – Deputy Oswald – deleted emails before reading them, though he’s now recovered those emails, saying he held his “hands up” to the misjudgement.
From the responses we got, a further three appear to have deleted emails once they’d read them and/or responded.
So which of your elected representatives responded to our media request, what did they say… and who chose to not to respond?*
| Name | Responded | Deleted Emails | Response / Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chris Blin | 🟢 | ❌ | NO I have not deleted any emails from members of the public about GST. I have received several hundred messages and have been working through them as quickly as possible, including late last night and again this morning before the Assembly sitting. I may not be able to respond to every email immediately while the States is sitting, but I do believe it is important to read, acknowledge and take account of the views being expressed. Many people are genuinely worried about the impact of these proposals, and those concerns deserve to be heard. |
| Yvonne Burford | 🟢 | ❌ | I most certainly have NOT deleted emails from members of our community. In my 10 years in the States I have always tried to respond to everyone who has contacted me. However, in the last week or so I have been working 12 hour days, every day in the lead up to the debate so although I have not been able to reply to all the emails, I have read them all. I value hearing views from members of our community. |
| Tina Bury | 🟢 | ⚠️ | I assume you mean deleting them without reading or responding in which case, no I haven’t. |
| Andy Cameron | 🔴 | ? | |
| Haley Camp | 🟢 | ❌ | No I haven’t deleted any. Admittedly, I also haven’t managed to respond to all of them due to the volumes. Around 650 when I turned in last night and still more to wake up to this morning. |
| Garry Collins | 🟢 | ❌ | I have read and replied to them all, about 700, a few late nights and early mornings!!! Plus, many replies to say thank you for replying, so you get more traffic, but the number is 700 individual people, but many from groups, so the reach is thousands. |
| Rob Curgenven | 🟢 | ❌ | |
| Lindsay de Sausmarez | 🔴 | ? | |
| David Dorrity | 🔴 | ? | |
| Steve Falla | 🟢 | ❌ | I have read them all and moved them into a separate folder so that I don’t miss other important States business in my inbox. |
| Adrian Gabriel | 🟢 | ❌ | Nothing deleted by me |
| John Gollop | 🔴 | ? | |
| Min Tat (David) Goy | 🔴 | ? | |
| Sarah Hansmann Rouxel | 🔴 | ? | |
| Mark Helyar | 🟢 | ❌ | |
| Rhona Humphreys | 🟢 | ⚠️ | I can confirm I have read each of the emails that have come into my inbox. They have then been deleted from there to keep the box clear. I have replied to some, but no where near all, as the sheer volume and time make that impossible. |
| Neil Inder | 🟢 | ❌ | |
| Bruno Kay-Mouat | 🟢 | ❌ | |
| Sasha Kazantseva-Miller | 🟢 | ❌ | |
| Marc Laine | 🟢 | ❌ | |
| Ross Le Brun | 🔴 | ? | |
| Marc Leadbeater | 🔴 | ? | |
| Munazza Malik | 🔴 | ? | |
| Aidan Matthews | 🟢 | ❌ | I haven’t delete any emails, but when I get a lot of them in my inbox it does take some time for me to try and get to them all. When there’s a lot (as we have for GST at the moment) I often find I recognise many of the names of the people sending them! I hope this helps, |
| Liam McKenna | 🔴 | ? | |
| Paul Montague | 🔴 | ? | |
| Andrew Niles | 🟢 | ❌ | Thank you for your email. I have saved each email, and I either have replied already or will do so in the coming days. I appreciate the emails either in support of the new Tax Reform package or in opposition. It is important. |
| George Oswald | 🟢 | 🗑️ | Read Deputy Oswald’s full response here. |
| Jayne Ozanne | 🟢 | ❌ | I’ve read and replied to virtually all emails I’ve received – save those that were rude or from those who had been rude to me online in the past. They have been very moving, and I will reference their impact on me in my speech today. |
| Charles Parkinson | 🟢 | ❌ | |
| Sally Rochester | 🟢 | ⚠️ | I have but only once they have been read. |
| Tom Rylatt | 🟢 | ❌ | |
| Andy Sloan | 🟢 | ❌ | I don’t delete emails. It’s been difficult to keep track of all the tsunami of no to GST emails in recent days and it’s impossible to reply to all of them, so apologies if people think they’re not being registered, they are. I have a general rule to always reply to personal emails directed personally to me and the sheer volume of anti GST emails has made that difficult too. |
| Gavin St Pier | 🔴 | ? | |
| Jennifer Strachan | 🟢 | ❌ | |
| Lee van Katwyk | 🔴 | ? | |
| Simon Vermeulen | 🔴 | ? | |
| Steve Williams | 🔴 | ? | |
| Alexander Snowdon (Alderney Representative) | 🟢 | ❌ | |
| Edward Hill (Alderney Representative) | 🟢 | ❌ |
* We gave deputies a deadline of 19:00 on Wednesday 15 July 2026 to respond, as the States Assembly was sitting. While we expect the majority of deputies we didn’t receive a response from actually didn’t respond, we acknowledge it’s possible someone could have thought they’d replied or had a technical issue.
