An informal group of friends are putting on carol singing sessions in Guernsey French this Christmas, and are inviting anyone interested to join them for free.

There was already a session last week, and two more are planned this Sunday 23 November and on Sunday 7 November.

Orgnaisers say no prior knowledge of Guernesiais is required and lyrics and pronunciations are available for each carol.

They take place in the Lansdown Room at the KGV at 14:00 and last one hour. Additional sessions will be arranged if there’s demand.

Coordinator Julie Walker says: “We’re learning the language just for pleasure, not performing so there’s no need to be a ‘singer’ to take part. For something different this year, we are inviting anyone who plays a ukulele to bring it along and join in.”

Joy Liggett from the Guernsey Language Commission commented: “The Guernsey Language Commission are pleased to sponsor carol singing in Guernesiais; learning a language through music is not only fun but effective. All the activities spearheaded by Julie are best described as a ‘grass roots’ initiative for people of any fluency level to engage with Guernesiais.”
