Guernsey’s only dedicated independent bookshop is set to close at Christmas, with owner Kelvin Whelan warning that rising costs and the introduction of GST will make life increasingly difficult for small retailers.
Writer’s Block, which opened in the Commercial Arcade in 2023, will shut its doors after three years of selling new books, hosting author events and building a community around reading and local writing.
Mr Whelan said the decision reflected the growing challenges facing independent shops, with costs increasing faster than the business could grow its sales.
He warned that GST, which is due to be introduced in 2028, would add another layer of pressure on small retailers already facing a difficult trading environment.
In a statement to customers, he said: “The environment for small retailers has been growing ever more challenging, and our costs have been rising faster than we can sell more books to cover them.”
Mr Whelan said he had loved running the shop, describing it as the fulfilment of a personal dream which had also helped him develop his writing career.
The bookshop has become a hub for local authors, book launches and literary events, while also offering customers a more personal alternative to online shopping and larger retailers.
He thanked local authors, suppliers and customers for supporting the business, saying he had enjoyed getting to know people through “bookish chats” over the past three years.
Writer’s Block will continue trading until Christmas, with the exact closing date dependent on the progress of its closing-down sale.
The shop will continue restocking and bringing in major September releases as usual, although customers may begin to see gaps appearing on shelves as the business starts winding down from the end of September.
Changes to custom orders, gift vouchers and the book club will be announced shortly.
