States of Guernsey - Guernsey Dairy - Milk for schools.

Young children will get a free glass of milk each day as part of a new health programme launched by Guernsey Dairy, if businesses sign up to sponsor breakfast clubs.

A daily serving of milk will be made available to children in primary schools, preschools, and day nurseries under the ‘Milk for Schools’ scheme.

It’s being supported by the States and the island’s top dietician who are backing the plan to see kids getting a nutritious start to the day.

The scheme has already been piloted at several locations with positive feedback from parents and teachers noting improved behaviour and a clearer understanding of nutrition.Β

Local businesses including Praxis and IslandHealth have already signed up to support breakfast clubs at primary schools, while the Skipton Community Fund is bankrolling milk for all children at Le Rondin.

Guernsey Dairy is now looking for more sponsors to ensure all children can enjoy a fresh glass each morning.

Andrew Tabel, Operations Director at Guernsey Dairy said that the project team has already contacted more than 80 local businesses, but said anyone interested should email milkforschools@guernseydairy.com.Β

β€œBy sponsoring a setting, companies can make a direct and visible difference to the health of the island’s children, while also teaching them the importance of Guernsey’s dairy farming sector and its contribution in supporting the island’s natural habitat and biodiversity,” he said.

Myfanwy Datta, Clinical Lead Dietitian, Nutrition and Dietetics for States of Guernsey, said daily consumption of milk β€œsupports strong bones and teeth, healthy muscles, and energy levels – all vital for concentration and learning.

β€œMilk is a simple, natural, and effective way to give children the best start to their day,” she said.

Kim Hutchison, Head of Primary Leadership and Development at the States, said all primary schools now have breakfast clubs which would be bolstered by the guarantee of milk.

β€œThey play a crucial role in preparing children for a successful day of learning. The Milk for Schools initiative enhances these clubs by adding a nutritious element, helping children feel ready, energised, and focused in the classroom,” she added.
