Engineers have been “working around the clock” to make safe a property after a “gas escape” was suspected earlier this week.

Guernsey Energy said it was alerted to the suspicions on Tuesday evening.

Work started as soon as possible to rectify the fault said a spokesperson.

“We became aware of a suspected gas escape on Grange Road (on Tuesday) night which has meant the road has had to be closed with temporary restrictions and diversions in place. This will be causing delays and congestion, and we recommend that drivers avoid the Grange Road area and find an alternative route.

“Our engineers are working around the clock on site to rectify the situation as quickly and safely as possible and are doing so in consultation with the States Traffic and Highways Services. We apologise for any inconvenience this is causing and will remove these additional traffic restrictions as soon as we can.”

The road is one way from Doyle Road up the hill, and one way towards town between the Doyle Road/Vauvert junction and Havilland Street.

Traffic and Highways Services confirmed that it had “approved a request from Island Energy” to deal with the “unplanned emergency works”.

Motorists are encouraged to “allow extra time for your journey and consider whether you can take a different route”.

Meanwhile, Guernsey Energy said anyone who smells gas or suspects a gas escape should call the 24-hour emergency line on 749000.
