The Better Journeys Project has launched a new Fund for Schools to support initiatives that will encourage pupils to walk, scoot, or cycle to school.

The goal is to help schools install or improve infrastructure and run programmes that make “active travel” easier, safer, and more convenient, said the charity.

Some suggested projects include secure cycle parking, safer access routes, lockers, loan bikes, and engagement campaigns.

The 2025/26 Fund is supported by Headline Sponsor Appleby Global and The Tom Dorey Eco-Legacy.

Funding is available for Guernsey schools of up to £3,000 per school, which includes a boost from the Health Improvement Commission.

Up to £1,500 per school is available in Jersey, where the charity is still looking for further financial backing.

Applications close on 10 January next year, said Director of Better Journeys, Rollo de Sausmarez.

“This Fund helps schools turn good ideas into real, on-the-ground changes that make the school run cleaner, safer, and healthier for everyone.

“From improved bike parking to simple route improvements and awareness campaigns, small steps can have big daily impacts.”

Amy Woollaston, the Active Travel Officer at the Health Improvement Commission, said she is pleased they’ve been able to support the scheme.

“The Health Improvement Commission are thrilled to support the ‘Fund for Schools’ initiative by the Better Journeys Project in Guernsey as it is a fantastic opportunity to help make active travel the easier choice for local families.

“Our BeActive team aims to get more people, more active, more often and this initiative supports that by helping children build healthy habits from a young age.

“Walking, cycling and scooting to school not only boosts physical and mental wellbeing, but also sets the tone for a healthier, more active community.”
