Vauvert Primary, Ladies’ College, and the Sixth Form Centre are each getting £1,500 to spend on active travel projects.
The three schools have won the funding from a pot provided by the ‘Better Journeys Project’ which is trying to encourage everyone to leave their car at home and make alternative travel choices more often.
The Better Journeys Project’s ‘Fund for Schools’ was launched last November, with money available in both Guernsey and Jersey.
Grouville school in Jersey has also won £1,400, with the four schools across the Channel Islands now able to spend the cash on their own active travel initiatives.
This could include new infrastructure or projects to support and encourage alternative travel options to free the schools from debilitating traffic, said the Better Journeys Project team.
We know that six schools had applied for a share of the money in Guernsey with the Sixth Form Centre planning to put its £1500 grant towards a bike loan scheme and drying room.
Vauvert school will be putting in three scooter racks while Ladies College will put its money towards new bike sheds that have been designed by year 12 pupils.
In Jersey, Grouville is spending its money on a ‘bike bus’ initiative.
Mark Smith, Director of the Better Journeys Project, led the judging panel in Guernsey.
“We were delighted by the quality and number of entries we received, but we can’t fund all of them! After reviewing the entries, we chose the three we felt would have the highest likelihood of success and the most potential for creating meaningful change on school runs.”
Amy Woolaston of the Health Improvement Committee, which both provided some of the financial support to the fund, was also on the judging panel.
“It’s brilliant that this community-led initiative will be directly driving real change across the island for those whose applications have been successful”.
The unsuccessful schools which didn’t receive funding from the Better Journeys Project this time round might receive some good news soon too.
Each of their applications have been shared with the States Traffic and Highway Services team, and some of those projects might be able to be covered by the States budget.
The Better Journeys Project Fund for Schools was made possible by the support of 2025 Sponsor Appleby Global, £1500 from The Health Improvement Commission, and the continued support of The Tom Dorey Eco-Legacy.
The charity plans to run another fund round in November this year.
