More people across the Crown Dependencies are making active travel choices – as proven by the recent Better Journeys Week.
Almost a quarter of journeys recorded during the campaign week in May were ‘active’ – meaning they didn’t involve a car, but may have been by bus, bike, scooter, or foot.
The annual initiative, organised by the Better Journeys Project, has collated data since 2022, with more than 150,000 active journeys recorded.
The data also points to an increase of 17% in active travel over that four year period.
During this years’ campaign, active travel peaked at more than one in five recorded journeys, with it making up 24.7% of all traffic on Thursday 21 May, and 20.5% on Tuesday 19 May.
Better Journeys Committee member, Rollo de Sausmarez said: “We know it’s not always possible to leave the car behind. However, choosing a more sustainable option once or twice a week can still have a meaningful impact.
“Better Journeys Week is about showing that small, realistic choices can add up when more people feel able to make them.”

Better Journey’s Week was sponsored by Mourant, with Head of Responsible Business, Jen Watson, saying she’s “proud” to support the campaign, and that it’s a “great reminder that sustainable travel is not about perfection, it’s about making better choices where we can.”
“It was great to see so many of our colleagues in Guernsey and Jersey get involved this year in ways that worked for them – whether that meant doing the school run on foot, swapping the car for a bike, or choosing public transport for their commute.”
