The GSPCA has begun the next phase of its ‘Biggest Build’ appeal, with several of the charity’s older buildings now demolished to make way for incoming, new, modern facilities.
The demolished buildings had previously housed the cattery, staff room, laundry, and small animal areas. These facilities had been in use for more than 40 years.
In their place, a 12-kennel facility is being built to house dogs in need, including those from welfare and cruelty cases, strays, and dogs awaiting rehoming.
The new section will also feature updated laundry and dog grooming facilities.
Meanwhile the foundations for the new Wildlife Hospital are currently being laid, with the new hospital designed to provide specialist care for injured and orphaned wildlife in Guernsey.
GSPCA Manager Steve Byrne explained some of the works taking place have brought back memories for many of the long serving staff.
“Starting to lay the foundations for the Wildlife Hospital was a huge moment for us and for animal welfare in Guernsey and this next chapter is incredible all be it emotional to see.”
Mr Byrne continued: “The buildings we’ve demolished had decades of history and this next part of the demolition brings back many memories for the team, some who have been helping at the GSPCA for over 30 years.”

The GSPCA has raised £1.5 million so far, but still needs to raise a further £2.2 million to complete the project by November next year.
The charity is asking for community support through a variety of options, including through their buy-a-brick scheme, by sponsoring a kennel or other area.
They’re also looking for donations of materials or services for the build, or by becoming a Build Partner.
Mr Byrne says through Guernsey’s Community, it’s wildlife can have a bright future: “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported the Big Build so far, but we still need help to raise the remaining £2.2 million to bring this vision to life.
“Together we can build a brighter future for the animals of Guernsey.”
