Guernsey Symphony Orchestra: Celebrating International Women’s Day
The Guernsey Symphony Orchestra will be back at St James this Saturday, 8th March, bringing you a fabulous performance from 8pm!
While Rossini’s William Tell Overture might be considered an odd choice for a concert on International Women’s Day, the Guernsey Symphony Orchestra will use this much loved work to showcase many female instrumentalists. From the quintet of solo ‘cellos that open the piece, through the duet between the cor anglais and flute, to the trumpets beckoning in the march of the Swiss Soldiers, enjoy some virtuosic playing from within the ranks of the GSO.
The Gaelic Symphony, by American composer Amy Beach, was the first symphony by an American woman composer to gain public attention, written at a time when American composers of either gender were a relative rarity on the international scene. It was Beach’s response to Bohemian composer Antonín Dvořák’s call for American composers to explore their musical roots.
Derek Bourgeois’ Concerto for Trombone, Op. 114 is a masterwork that has tested the limits of trombone technique since its premiere. Considering Bourgeois’ goal was to challenge Christian Lindberg, the virtuosity required to perform the Concerto can seem unattainable to many performers. Polina Tarasenko will thrill us all with her interpretation.
Ewa Strusinska returns to the delight of the orchestra to conduct a concert to celebrate all women this International Women’s Day.

Ballet d’Jèrri
Jersey’s National Ballet presents a special preview performance of its next upcoming production, taking place at the PRCPA from 7:30pm on Friday 14th March.
Ballet d’Jèrri is coming to Guernsey stages for the first time with a striking double bill of Whiteout by Marco Goecke and Deliberate Mistake by Asier Edeso Eguia.
Based in Jersey, the company aims to present unique, thought-provoking choreographic work that speaks to the island’s heritage while connecting with audiences far beyond its shores.
Whiteout by Marco Goecke is a powerful, physically charged work that showcases his signature movement language – sharp, intricate, comic, and sad. The work premiered at Les Ballets de Monte Carlo in 2008, and has since been performed by companies all around the world. This hauntingly bittersweet piece is the perfect introduction to the work of one of the giants of the dance industry and an incomparable artist.
Deliberate Mistake, one of Ballet d’Jèrri’s first commissioned original works, is a poetic reflection on Jersey’s history, identity, and collective memory. Co-created by choreographer Asier Edeso Eguia and artist Yulia Makeyeva, with an original score by Ilia Osokin, the work takes inspiration from Jersey’s knitting traditions – where deliberate flaws in knitted jumpers once helped identify lost sailors – transforming this idea into a deeply moving metaphor for community, fragility, and resilience.
This recital will be previewed first in Guernsey with an abridged technical setup, ahead of performances at home in Jersey and on tour in Paris. Join us for this landmark performance as Ballet d’Jèrri makes its Guernsey debut, bringing its distinctive artistic voice to new audiences.
International Women’s Day VEF DJ Night
Join the wonderful Vale Earth Fair Collective this Saturday, 8th March, as they once again celebrate International Women’s Day at the De La Rue!

Beyond the Shadows: An Exhibition by Helen Glencross
Next on our lineup of creative events is the Gate House Gallery’s latest exhibition, ‘Beyond the Shadows’ by Helen Glencross, opening on the 15th of March 2025.
Beyond the Shadows is a photography exhibition that invites you to look closer and step into a dreamlike world.
Rooted in the familiar, the lines between the real and the imagined blur, creating distorted yet beautiful abstract images. What is visible and what is obscured becomes part of the same story.
The images serve as portals, encouraging reflection on the beauty that lies in overlooked corners of the everyday. They transport the viewer to realms that exist just below the surface, inviting introspection, and challenging perception.
This collection is testament to Helen’s experimental approach, where often the most interesting images emerge from simply being present and capturing what is in front of her, rather than seeking out the perfect shot.
Guernsey Pubs Exhibition at the Royal Court
Head down to the Royal Court between now and the 21st March, to indulge in a retrospective exhibition of Guernsey Pubs classics!
The show is free to visit between 8:45 to 16:30 every weekday.
