Here’s what’s coming up…
Feminist film night
To celebrate International Women’s Day, a special screening of a pioneering feminist film is taking place this Saturday 8 March.
‘One Sings, the Other Doesn’t’ is the iconic work of French filmmaker Agnès Varda of the French New Wave movement.
First screened in 1977, the film has “reshaped cinema” with its bold storytelling and feminist vision of female friendship, autonomy and the fight for reproductive rights.
The evening also includes a short talk reflecting on women’s rights issues both locally and internationally.
The film will be shown in the AV Theatre at Jersey Museum at 18:30.
You can reserve tickets here.
Band practice
Witness Jersey Premier Brass prepare for their regional contest next weekend in a free concert at the St Helier Town Hall.
JPB will showcase their contest piece ‘Friendly Takeover’, and musicians will also be joined by La Ronde Concert Band of Jersey to present a jam-packed programme of varying musical genres.
The performance is free and begins at 19:30.
Community orchestra
Jersey Academy of Music’s flagship community orchestra, JASTO, takes centre stage this Saturday 8 March at Les Quennevais School.
Advanced instrumental students will play alongside members of Jersey Community Orchestra and Jersey Symphony Orchestra and visiting young professionals, in an exciting evening of musical collaboration.
Under the guidance of conductor Caroline Hobbs-Smith, musicians will present a diverse programme including works from Borodin, Menken, Saint-Saens and even parts of the Barbie movie soundtrack.
In addition to the concert, JAM’s Intermediate Orchestra and Da Capo will be presenting a free concert at 17:00, also at Les Quennevais. No tickets are required.
You can purchase tickets for JASTO on Eventbrite here.
Nowhere less now
It’s your last chance to witness ArtHouse Jersey’s immersive installation ‘Nowhere Less Now’, brought to Capital House by artists Lindsay Seers and Keith Sargent.
Visitors will witness an upturned ship hull in the space, focussed on themes of time and memory.
The exhibition also features a selection of Jersey-specific films, complementing the artists’ exploration of ancestors and historical figures, including Seer’s great-great-uncle and Mina Bergson, an artist and sister of Nobel Prize-winning philosopher Henri Bergson.
The exhibition runs until Sunday 9 March.
Details and opening times can be found on the ArtHouse Jersey website.
Poetry soirée
Head to CCA Galleries International for an evening of poetry with local writer and poet Traci O’Dea.
A series of readings of poems developed in recent workshops will take place, from Traci and other local poets, which have been inspired by the gallery’s ‘Word Play’ Exhibition.
The soirée takes place on Friday 7 March at the St Helier gallery from 18:00 – 20:00.
You can purchase tickets via Eventbrite here.
