Guernsey’s Chief Minister, Deputy Lindsay de Sausmarez, has formally written to UK Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer conveying the Government of Guernsey’s deep concern over the ongoing Gaza crisis.

This follows earlier public calls from 12 States Deputies on the same issue.

In her letter, Deputy de Sausmarez expressed her “profound concern” for Gaza’s civilian suffering, and supported calls for an immediate end to the conflict, and the upholding of international law.

In a call for action, it urges for “something more urgent to stop the killing and get people the food they desperately need.”

It also expresses hope that the global community will find “effective ways to protect civilians, alleviate human suffering and secure lasting peace.”

Lastly she signs off that the Government of Guernsey states its “unwavering support for upholding international law.”

Hundreds of UK MPs have recently written to the UK Prime Minister with calls to recognise Palestine as a state, and to work towards peace in the region, and an end to the humanitarian crisis taking place.

It’s understood emergency meetings are taking place in order to cement the UK’s position.

France recently adjusted their stance, and are reportedly planning to recognise Palestinian statehood this September.

In a statement released by the States of Guernsey, following the publication of Deputy de Sausmarez’s letter, the Island’s Government say they are not in a position to make statements contradicting UK Policy, but equally, the British Crown is responsible for Guernsey’s international relations:

“It is important to note that due to the centuries-old constitutional relationship with the British Crown, the Crown is responsible for Guernsey’s formal international relations and defence matters. In practice this responsibility is exercised by the UK Government.

“Therefore, it is not appropriate for the States of Guernsey to make any statement which contradicts UK foreign policy. That is a long-standing principle which the Policy & Resources Committee will continue to follow.”

Deputy David Dorrity was one of 12 elected officials who recently appealed to Deputy de Sausmarez to use her voice to call for justice, peace, and decisive action.
