A team of climbers from Guernsey is taking on Africa’s highest mountain in memory of their daughter, sister and friend, Rose Haysom, who died from a rare form of cancer last year.
The challenge – nicknamed KilimanjaRose – will see five climbers scale the 19,341ft (5,895m) Mount Kilimanjaro, with donations going to Les Bourgs Hospice.
Steve and Lily Haysom, Christian Povall, Erin Scullion and Helena de Careret are aiming to reach the top on what would have been Rose’s 28th birthday.
Mr Haysom, Rose’s dad, said his daughter was “so brave and inspirational in her fight against cancer”.
He added: “She documented her journey on Instagram and helped to break the stigma and fear around cancer.
“The care she received from the staff at Les Bourgs Hospice was exemplary and allowed family and friends to have peace and tranquility to support Rose in her final days.”
They are hoping to raise £19,341 – £1 for every foot they climb – to donate to Les Bourgs.
Mr Haysom said they “wanted to raise the money to give something back to Les Bourgs and the community.”
