A French fisherman died in hospital, following a joint rescue operation between French and Guernsey emergency services.
Joburg Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre – which is based in Normandy and directs sea rescues in the Channel – told Guernsey’s Coastguard about the situation at 18:10 on Monday 10 August.
The French fishing boat was 14 miles off Guernsey’s west coast when one of its crew needed immediate medical assistance.
A spokesperson said: “We have been updated that despite the best efforts of all involved the patient has subsequently been declared deceased.”
Simon Granger, Duty Search Mission Coordinator at Guernsey Coastguard, said that despite the outcome the mission was “an excellent collaboration” between the different emergency services.
“All the agencies acted swiftly in sending medical assistance out to casualty and providing the best care possible.”
Guernsey Coastguard requested the launch of the St Peter Port Lifeboat at 18:25, which was launched 14 minutes later..
7 Lifeboat crew and 2 St Johns Paramedics were on board the the Spirt of Guernsey Lifeboat which arrived at the fishing boat 40 minutes later.
The French had dispatched a helicopter which reached the scene at about the same time as the lifeboat did.
The Guernsey lifeboat stood by as the casualty was winched to the helicopter, before being flown to hospital in Cherbourg.
