The morning after Storm Goretti, the Bailiwick awoke to hundreds of fallen trees and multiple damaged buildings – but thankfully no serious injuries to any people.

However, for one seal pup the storm clouds brought more than wind and rain.

The female – now called Icicle – was found struggling in the cold near the Fairy Ring, in poor condition and dangerously underweight at just 20kg which is half her ideal weight.

After monitoring her over the weekend, staff and volunteers from the GSPCA realised Icicle’s mother wasn’t coming back. So they rescued her and took her to the animal shelter, where she’s now receiving a warm welcome.

Steve Byrne, GSPCA manager, said: “There is a good chance Storm Goretti helped cause the pup to get separated from its mum and without her rich milk they loose condition very quickly.”

Doing well

Icicle is the fifth seal pup to be rescued in as many weeks, Mr Byrne said.

Geoff George, GSPCA’s Head of Marine Mammals, said Icicle was “doing well in our temporary intensive care area” and had already taken a dip in the pool with the other seals.

Anyone spotting a seal in trouble should call 257261, he added.

Significant damage

The storm, which brought winds of over 100mph, caused “significant damage” to the GSPCA’s shelter in St Andrew, Mr Byrne said.

“Our priority remains the safety and care of the animals, and thanks to our preparations, all animals are safe,” he said.

The road from Bailiff’s Cross is currently blocked by fallen trees and plants.

Appeal for donations

Access to the shelter is currently limited because of fallen trees on private land blocking some access routes.

People should take care if they need to visit, Mr Byrne said.

The GSPCA is “appealing for donations to help with the significant costs of repairs and recovery,” he added.
