The newborn baby hats for Ukraine appeal has reached another landmark with 45,000 knitted items now donated to the war ravaged country for its most vulnerable residents.
“We receive around one thousand donations every month,” said Lilita Krūze, Founder of the Appeal.
“This allows us to continuously supply three maternity hospitals in Kyiv and Zhytomyr, as well as Ukrainian refugees in Latvia. We are very grateful to our long-standing supporters as well as those who have donated recently,” she said.
Ms Krūze has asked for locals to continue donating appropriate items of clothing because of the change in seasons.
“With the change of seasons, we would respectfully ask that appropriate items only are donated, space is inevitably an issue for the recipient hospitals,” she said.
“For the summer season we ask that our supporters knit / crochet hats, blankets to wrap a baby in, cardigans, mitts and bootees and hand made toys plus sewn items such as dresses. Think lightweight as temperatures in Ukraine in the summer months can reach more than plus 30 degrees.”
Ms Krūze says that the appeal is lucky to have boxes sent free of charge.

“We are extremely lucky that DHL are continuing to support the Appeal by sending boxes free of charge. We have a limit of how many boxes are sent each month so we need to only send newborn and premature baby items; these also must be new.”
