Guernsey’s Office of the Data Protection Authority is one of 30 jurisdictions leading a major international initiative to examine how popular websites and mobile apps are handling children’s personal data.
The 2025 Global Privacy Enforcement Network involves examining platforms to check if they are transparent about how they use children’s information, and are using that data correctly.
It’s to make sure websites and social platforms have age assurance mechanisms in place, and use privacy-protective controls to limit data collection.
The ODPA says the sweep will ensure online services consider the best interests of children and protect them from risks like online tracking, profiling, and targeting.
The ODPA Commissioner, Brent Homan, said promoting children’s rights is a top priority and that the results will be used for the benefit of the Bailiwick’s younger generations.
“We are honoured to be a coordinator of this global privacy sweep, focusing this year on promoting and protecting a safe digital childhood.
“In Guernsey and around the world promoting children’s rights represents a top priority, and we look forward to leveraging the results of the sweep to the benefit of the Bailiwick’s younger generations.”
The ODPA says the full findings of the sweep will be compiled and published in a report in the coming months.
