A doctor who has practised in the Bailiwick for decades is departing, and has put a collection of her own artwork up for auction as a parting gift to a Guernsey charity.

Dr Petra Palmeri arrived in Guernsey in the year 2000, and has been working as a GP since.

“I’ve truly enjoyed my time on the island, it’s been both professionally and personally very rewarding,” she said.

“I’ve met wonderful people here and made many good friends, so Guernsey will always hold a very special place in my heart.”

Also recognised as a talented artist, Dr Palmeri has put 30 of her own creations, including watercolours and oils on canvas, up for auction through Martel Maides.

The sale will benefit Les Bourgs Hospice, a charity which has resonated with the doctor during her time in Guernsey.

“I don’t have a specific target in mind,” Dr Palmeri said. “I’m hoping simply to raise as much as possible. Every contribution will make a difference.

“I chose Les Bourgs Hospice because, through my work as a GP, I’ve seen first-hand the incredible care and support they provide to patients and families at the most difficult times.

“It’s also important to highlight that the hospice doesn’t receive government funding, so it relies heavily on community support. This felt like a very meaningful cause to support as I mark my retirement.”

All 30 lots are up for auction online only, currently they range from £50 to £280, with the deadline approaching this Sunday morning.

When asked if she herself has a personal favourite up for auction, Dr Palmeri pointed to two pieces in particular which hold a special place.

“That’s always a difficult question, as each painting has its own story. However, I do have a particular fondness for two of my oil paintings ‘Pomegranates’ and ‘Cherry Splash’.

“They both reflect my love for still life and the way I’ve developed my style over the years.”
