Broken glass left around La Vallette Bathing Pools is putting swimmers, animals and families at risk – and has now prompted increased patrols around the area.
Bailiwick Law Enforcement issued a warning yesterday after what they described as “recurring anti-social behaviour” at the swimming zone, which was recently praised on Britain’s Biggest podcast, The Rest is Politics, by host Alastair Campbell.
Officers said they had been made aware by Agriculture, Countryside and Land Management Services of ongoing issues at the site, with routine inspections over the past month repeatedly finding and removing broken glass bottles from the pool area.
Damage to a nearby bin was also identified during an inspection on Monday.
Bailiwick Law Enforcement said La Valette was “a special place that many islanders enjoy” and stressed that safety was a key concern.
“Leaving glass bottles and litter behind creates serious safety risks,” the organisation said.
“Broken glass poses a real danger of injury to swimmers and animals, particularly at weekends when staff are not on site to carry out immediate clean-ups.”
It added that the behaviour also leads to avoidable costs for clean-up and repairs, which ultimately affect the wider community.
The public has been warned that the area is now being monitored, with patrols set to take place going forwards. Bailiwick Law Enforcement said anyone responsible for damage or littering could face enforcement action.
While news of the increased patrols were welcomed by some, some people on social media said that more could be done to clamp down on anti-social behaviour at the beloved pool.
One commenter suggested that the road should be blocked after dark to avoid people entering the area, while several others called for more CCTV in the area.
