The girl suffered a deep splinter to her leg which had to be treated at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital, leaving her with a cut and bruising.
The incident happened last month, in the primary school’s playground.
Headteacher of Amherst, Tracey Moore said the health and safety officer was involved immediately as staff realised how serious the situation was.
“As soon as a member of staff became aware, the student was examined by the school’s First Aider and we contacted the student’s mum.
“The location of the incident was cordoned off and reviewed by a Health and Safety Officer. As a preventative measure, the bench was sanded to ensure that any further splinters were removed.
“We would like to assure all parents and carers that we take the safety of our children very seriously.”
