A new collection of short stories inspired by Guernsey shows the “spirit of the Bailiwick”, its organisers have said.
Twenty pieces of fiction and creative non-fiction have been selected for ‘Time and Tide – Guernsey Short Story Anthology’, which has been put together by the Guernsey Literary Festival.
The stories were chosen from more than 100 entries written by people with a connection to Guernsey.
Ross Raisin, the competition’s main judge, said the stories selected “share a common ground”.
“A distinctive weather blows through these stories; the constancy of the sea a presence throughout, by turns a reassurance and a danger,” she said.
The book is being published by local publisher Blue Ormer and will be launched at the 2026 Guernsey Literary Festival in April.
‘Bold and unforgettable’
The front cover of the book will feature the painting ‘Night Crossing’ by Carol Price, which was chosen through a parallel competition run with Art for Guernsey.
Blue Ormer said the collection – sponsored by Sarnia Hotels – offered a “bold and unforgettable take on island storytelling”.
“Across the collection, a body washes up on a quiet beach and a choice is made to stay silent; a piece of the tide goes missing; a wartime blind spot on the coast becomes a place of fragile resistance; and a girl slips into the water and does not entirely come back the same.”
This year’s Guernsey Literary Festival will take place from 24 April to 3 May, with tickets going on sale in February.
