The States of Guernsey is on the lookout for a new civil servant to lead Revenue Services’ GST team, with a potential salary of more than £85,000 on offer – and they must live on the island.
It may have taken years to get the new tax through the Assembly, but the States has wasted no time in looking for the first of an estimated 16 civil servants who will administer the controversial tax.
An internal job ad, seen by Express, said the person who gets the role would be responsible for the “development, implementation, and operational delivery” of the service.
The civil servant would also oversee “continuous improvement and performance excellence” so Revenue Services can “deliver efficient, effective and customer focus ensuring that GST customer service and compliance activities are delivered fairly, consistently, and effectively”, the advert said.
Jean Mehers, Director of Revenue Service Operations, said the successful candidate would be responsible for “strategic leadership with operational accountability for the effective administration of GST and the protection of public revenue”.
The salary, of between about £69,500 and £85,500, reflected the “significant responsibility, leadership and technical complexity associated with the position”, Mrs Mehers added.
“The role requires strong leadership, people management, change delivery, analytical and decision-making capabilities, together with experience in tax, compliance, regulation or a comparable operational environment,” she said.
The role will be advertised internally and then opened out to other applicants if this is unsuccessful, but they will need to live in the Bailiwick.
“There will be no option for the role to be undertaken remotely from outside Guernsey,” Mrs Mehers said.
