Consultant General and Colorectal surgeon Rebecca Fallaize MBBS PGCMedEd FRCS (Eng), is taking over from Miss Carol Makin & Mr Robert Kiff, both Consultant Colorectal Surgeons following their retirement.
Miss Makin and Mr Kiff had a combined total of 85 years employment since qualifying as doctors in the 1970’s before deciding to take life a bit easier.
They relocated to Guernsey following a chance conversation, and said they quickly adjusted to the lifestyle.
Miss Makin was firs to come to Guernsey in 2010 after 20 years as a consultant surgeon at Wirral University Hospital NHS Trust with Mr Kiff following 18 months later, relocating from St Helens & Knowsley NHS Trust. Their move came shortly after the youngest of their three children had gone to university.
“This provided a wonderful opportunity to do something different – a change is as good as a rest – as they say. And what a change it was!” said Miss Makin and Mr Kiff.
“The new challenges of the local medical system, working in a small community with fewer colleagues and no junior staff. However, it provided the opportunity to offer truly personalised care – supporting patients throughout their treatment.”
Their job share presented a novel opportunity for the couple and their employers at the MSG with flexibility for both, giving Miss Makin and Mr Kiff time to pursue other interests.
Miss Makin said, “Over the last 9 years working with the MSG there have been far more ups than downs. No question we would do just the same again. We love living on the island and have made many new friends. We are staying in Guernsey for the foreseeable future, so do say ‘hello’ when we pass in the street!”
With that job share now at an end, Miss Fallaize has started work as the island’s Consultant General and Colorectal surgeon. She was born and raised in Guernsey, educated at Hautes Capelles Primary School and the Ladies’ College. In 2003 she graduated from St George’s Hospital Medical School with a distinction in clinical management. During Miss Fallaize’s training she also completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Medical Education at the University of Bristol, gaining a merit, and undertook additional training in quality improvement methods aimed at improving patient care and safety.

Miss Fallaize’s Basic Surgical Training was undertaken in Bristol prior to Higher General Surgical Training within the Severn Deanery. During this time, she trained in all areas of general surgery including placements at the Bristol Children’s Hospital and the major trauma centre at North Bristol NHS Trust.
She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, having obtained FRCS in General and Colorectal Surgery in 2016 and she is on the General Medical Council specialist register. She is a trained laparoscopic surgeon and undertakes the majority of operations for colorectal and biliary disease through a minimally invasive approach. Aside from her broad general surgical experience, she has a specialist interest in colorectal disease including proctological conditions, bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease and pelvic floor disorders.
She has moved back to the island with her husband and two children and says she is enjoying re-entering the music scene as well as embracing the outdoors lifestyle that Guernsey has to offer.
