As the Tour de France rolls back around, the ‘Yellow Guernsey’ award is coming back with it.
Student Monty Desforges, from the Sixth Form Centre, was awarded the first Guernsey of 2026 for his work heading up the school’s Active Travel Group.
The campaign recognises eco activists on two wheels.
Inspired by a similar idea in the UK, Guernsey’s Health Improvement Commission and the Better Journeys Project launched the local award in 2022.
It honours those who show a commitment to active travel – which in turn helps reduce the island’s emissions and improves cardiovascular health.

The re-launch is supported by the ‘Tom Dorey Eco legacy’, started by the friends and family of the late Mr Dorey who was a keen cyclist, and winner of the award in 2023.
Mr Dorey and his friend Joseph Blake were both awarded their yellow guernseys previously, in recognition of their commitment to active travel.
Why a yellow Guernsey?
The eye-catching ‘sunburst yellow’ derives from the Tour de France, where the leader sports an iconic yellow jersey.
With the support of Le Tricoteur, Yellow Guernseys are awarded to people who share a passion for cycling as part of their commitment to active travel.
Director of the Better Journeys project, Rollo de Sausmarez, said the award will “help more people be inspired by those brilliant people who are already showing that better journeys make for a better island”.
“These active travel role models will now shine brightly when out cycling on the roads,” added Amy Woollaston for the Health Improvement Comission.
“The creative bunch at Le Tricoteur have knitted a stand out guernsey using a bespoke ‘Sunburst Yellow’ yarn exclusively for the winners.”
