Top Stories.

This Friday is National Proposal Day, so which Express stories have you fallen in love with this week and which have left you cold?

From cute cows to a sell-out evening of food and wine, here are the stories that got your heart fluttering in the last seven days.

1. (No) Tax Reform

A leading Reform MP was accused of tax avoidance earlier this week – with national newspapers naming Guernsey in their reports.

The Sunday Times claimed the party’s Deputy Leader avoided paying nearly £600,000 in corporation tax, using a Guernsey-listed company.

2. That’s not fine

A local finance firm was given the highest fine in Guernsey’s history for a series of systemic anti-money laundering failures over more than a decade.

Utmost Worldwide Limited was fined nearly £2m, while its CEO Leon Steyn has been given a £35,000 fine.

3. Bridge building starting soon

Building work at a site near The Bridge could start by next June, after amended plans were agreed by the Development and Planning Authority.

The North Side site, on the spot of the former Quayside building, will be turned into a retail centre with a Home Bargains at its core, along with four residential apartments.

4. A pair of sell outs

Two of Guernsey’s most-popular new eateries teamed up for one-off food and wine event.

Tickets for the evening, from Alba and 2 Frenchies, sold out in under two days.

5. What a cow! (says Chief Minister)

Guernsey’s Chief Minister is normally the model of diplomacy, but this week she’s been causing beef with her counterparts in Jersey, by criticising one of their most-prized national symbols.

Lindsay de Sausmarez claimed Guernsey cows were “just a tiny bit cuter” than their Jersey cousins – which some might think is an udderly outrageous claim.

Happier matters…

Feeling like you matter at work matters, according to Guernsey Mind (and anyone who’s ever had a moody manager).

Author and mental health advocate Rob Baker told an audience at Les Cotils that feeling valued and having work that energised us was “part of our DNA”.
