Islanders making their way towards St Ouen’s Bay at the weekend were quick to spot the latest addition to Jersey’s storied history of road-sign blunders…

The Infrastructure and Environment Department told Express this morning that the “La Paulente” sign error has been corrected.

But the mistake was in place long enough to catch the attention of more than a few St Ouen residents, with some taking to social media to highlight the blunder.

One islander wrote: “La Paulente is in the Parish of St Brolady.”

Another added: “Oh dear. At least the arrows are pointing the right way.”

The latter comment was presumably a reference to the infamous 2021 road marking error near Waitrose in St Brelade, when an arrow next to the “Look Left” sign pointed in the opposite direction.

Some commentators took a more serious tone however, with one describing it as “unbelievable that such a simple job can be messed up” and another questioning that “surely these things should be checked before being carried out”.

Another islander wrote: “We taxpayers will have to pay twice – once to have this sign made up and erected, and then to have it all done again.

“I’d like to know the total cost of this fiasco since I’m helping to fund it.”

While ‘La Paulente’ may be the latest road-sign blunder to make the news, it is far from the first.

In 2023, a Facebook group was created to document local signage errors – including misspelt words like “vehicies”, “remaing”, “Febuary”, “Divertion” and “Esplande”.

In the same year, a Ports of Jersey sign explained that access to a local pier was restricted “untill thurver notice”.
