Artists are being invited to submit proposals for the third iteration of a public art project transforming the concrete arches of Elizabeth Marina into a vibrant outdoor gallery.

ArtHouse Jersey has launched an open call for artists to take part in the 2026 edition of its ‘Art in the Arches’ project.

The year’s theme, safe haven, will see new murals installed alongside works created in previous years, continuing the gradual reimagining of the site.

Drawing on the historic role of harbours as places of both “protection and welcome”, the project reinterprets Elizabeth Marina as a literal and symbolic sanctuary, celebrating creativity, inclusivity and hope.

Artists are encouraged to respond broadly to the theme. Suggested starting points include sanctuary, home and resilience, ocean ecology, cultural identity and migration, and mental health and wellbeing.

Designs must be suitable for a public outdoor setting, reflect environmental sensitivity, explore relationships between land, sea and community, and be visible from a distance.

Submissions are open to local artists, community groups and schoolchildren, with organisers keen to showcase a wide range of perspectives.

A series of school and community workshops will run over the summer, feeding directly into the design and painting of the murals.

Each selected artist or group will be allocated an individual arch. Mural painting experience is not essential and the opportunity is paid, with successful applicants receiving both a fee and a materials budget.

Works will be completed during June and July 2026 on an agreed schedule.

ArtHouse Jersey programme head James Tyson said: “It’s wonderful to begin the third edition of this vibrant project that brings together local artists and school students to Elizabeth Marina over the summer months to create original artworks for everyone to enjoy.

“This year we are looking forward to fill in the remaining gaps in the arches and so are delighted to be working again with lead artist and curator Jacque Rutter to bring together a new cohort of artists around the theme of safe haven and see what inspiring images they create”.

Artists must submit a proposal of up to 500 words, a portfolio and a CV by Monday 8 March. Applications should be sent to Amy Baker at amy@arts.je
