A Battle of Flowers stalwart is calling on younger islanders to play their part in keeping the long-running tradition alive, as preparations ramp up for this year’s parade.
Marcus Davies, who has been involved in the event since the age of four, says the future of the spectacle depends on a new generation stepping forward to join the teams behind the floats.
Mr Davies is currently helping to shape the entry from St Mary and St Ouen, drawing on decades of experience designing and building displays for the annual cultural event.
“The Battle of Flowers has always been a huge part of my life,” he said.
“It’s not just about the parade, it’s about the people from all walks of life, many discovering a creative streak they never knew they had, the huge effort that goes on behind the scenes, and the sense of pride it brings to the island.”
Mr Davies explained that the scale of effort involved is often underestimated.
Months of planning, fundraising and construction go into each float, with rising costs and a shortage of volunteers posing ongoing challenges.
“To find a team of volunteers to take time out from their busy lives is a great hurdle,” he said.
“Yet for those who do, they benefit from the fun, the teamwork and ultimately the personal satisfaction of being an essential part in creating a masterpiece, and that is something that makes the event so special.”
Mr Davies is urging younger islanders to get involved to help ensure the future of the Battle of Flowers, which took place on a smaller scale in the town centre last year.
“It’s something you have to be part of to truly appreciate,” he explained.
“Whether you’re building, sourcing materials, picking, glueing or flowering or just supporting, it’s an event that means a lot to Jersey and the hundreds of exhibitors involved.
