The break-in, which saw several cages opened, happened overnight on Wednesday after the North Show’s ‘Fur and Feather Tent’ had been shut, police and event organisers said.
North Show Vice President and Show Manager Josh Gabriel said it had been a sour point of what otherwise had been an amazing year for the show.
“It appears someone’s managed to break-in and possibly mess around with some of the animals,” he said.
“During that time, unfortunately, it appears one rabbit was handled and their rear leg and spine was broken. Unfortunately they had to be put to sleep which is really, really disappointing that someone or some people thought it would be entertaining.”
The pet belonged to one of the committee members.
Police are investigating. Anyone with information should call them on 01481 222222 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111
