A community project helping islanders access affordable care and mobility equipment is seeking new premises after a sharp rise in demand.
Enable Jersey’s Equipment Hub was launched at La Collette Recycling Centre last year to give used care and mobility equipment a second life by selling it at a fraction of its original cost.
Since then, the hub has received more than 479 donations and rehomed 360 pieces of equipment.
Demand has continued to grow, with requests doubling during the first four months of 2026 compared with the same period last year.
However, Enable Jersey said its current base in the former Acorn recycling building has become too small to meet the project’s needs.
The lack of space has forced the charity to rent additional storage facilities at Le Gallais, adding costs and creating practical challenges by operating across two sites.
Chief executive Sean Pontin said the project’s success had created an urgent need for larger premises.
“Expensive pieces of essential equipment are put back in the community for others to use rather than sit unused or be thrown away,” he explained.
“In this way, we are ensuring that people have more choice and control and that finance is not a barrier to being able to remain living in the community.”
The charity had hoped to expand at its current location by installing additional storage on unused parking spaces adjacent to the building.
However, discussions with the government had not led to a solution, meaning the organisation is now looking for an alternative site.
Enable Jersey is seeking premises where all equipment can be stored in one location and where the hub could potentially open on Mondays – something that is not possible at the recycling centre because the site is closed.
The charity is now appealing to anyone who may be able to assist in finding a suitable new home for the project.
The Equipment Hub accepts donated care and mobility equipment, including wheelchairs, walkers, mobility scooters, profile beds and rise-and-recline chairs.
Items are checked, tested and serviced before being made available for sale at reduced prices.
