Islanders are weeks away from being able to experience some of the benefits of the major redevelopment of the departure lounge at Jersey Airport.

Work on the £10m project, which is being funded through Ports of Jersey’s own revenue, commenced last year.

It will bring about a transformation of the lounge, including the creation of a new mezzanine level with views of the runway, while also modernising infrastructure that has been in place since 1997.

Ports has announced that the current phase – which includes a significant portion of the visible changes such as the mezzanine level, a Martello-inspired lift tower, duty free area, a family area and a lot of the art – is expected to begin welcoming passengers towards the end of the week commencing 9 November.

Matt Thomas, the States-owned entity’s chief executive, said: “Every week brings us closer to opening a departure lounge that will massively enhance the experience for our passengers, while showcasing the very best of Jersey.”

Mr Thomas continued: “From the wonderful design features through to the smallest finishing touches, it has been a privilege to work with incredible partners from across the island to create a space that celebrates Jersey, while providing a more enjoyable and comfortable start to every journey.

“We can’t wait for our passengers to see the new departure lounge and would like to thank our partners at Ashbe Construction and everyone involved for the tremendous effort that has brought us to this point.”

The final stage will introduce a new bar and restaurant called The Shoreline, expected to open in April or May next year. Further improvements will also include a larger assisted travel lounge, a refurbishment of the main toilet facilities, and a retail store showcasing Genuine Jersey produce.

Mr Thomas added: “This project is about much more than creating a beautiful space for our passengers.

“Behind the scenes, substantial investment has been made in the 30-year old infrastructure that supports the airport’s long-term future, including improvements to heating, ventilation and other essential systems.”
