A portable gas bbq that was only a few month’s old had caught alight in a family’s back garden on Thursday evening.

No-one was hurt in the fire and the chef had made sure his family were in a safe place when he realized he couldn’t stop the fire himself but it took two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus to cool the gas cyclinder and bring the fire under control.

They say it looks like it was caused by dodgy connections or a damaged hose between the gas bottle and the bbq itself.

They are urging people to check that all the connections to gas fuelled bbq’s and outdoor heaters are spanner tight and say hoses need to be checked regularly and replaced when there are any signs of wear and tear.

This week the Fire Service announced they’re dealing with a lot more emergencies – last year was their busiest for four years.
