The Council of Ministers has now taken its final shape following the appointment of Senator Sir Mark Boleat to the newly created role of Planning Minister.
Chief Minister Lyndon Farnham had previously set out plans to split the existing Environment portfolio, with Senator Boleat his preferred pick for the new ministry which will look after planning and regulation matters.
In the States this morning, Members rejected a proposition from Deputy Tom Coles calling for the Chief Minister to take “no action” to establish the new ministerial office until further information has been published and debated by Members.
He had argued that the Assembly needed more detail on the costs, staffing implications, and rationale behind the shake-up. However, his proposition was rejected by 31 votes to 15.
That paved the way for Senator Boleat to take the role – although his appointment was not without a challenge from Reform Jersey co-leader Deputy Montfort Tadier.
Both politicians were given ten minutes to address the Assembly and lay out their vision for the Planning Minister position before facing a period of questions from Members.
Ultimately, Senator Boleat was elected to the post by 37 votes to seven, with two abstention, in the final ministerial appointment.
