A firefighter is preparing to run around the island – twice – to raise funds for the purchase of equipment for Jersey’s cancer unit, and a charity supporting the fire and rescue service community.

Matt Roberts will start his challenge at La Frégate on Saturday 19 April, following the route of the Island Walk anti-clockwise around Jersey.

Once back at the Waterfront, he will turn around and do it all again in the opposite direction.

The gruelling challenge will see Matt cover a total distance of roughly 150km.

Funds raised will be split equally between two charities: Friends of Jersey Oncology, and the Fire Fighters Charity.

He has already secured nearly £2,000 through his SportsGiving page.

The Jersey Fire and Rescue Service has said that some of Matt’s fellow firefighters will join him along the route throughout the challenge.

In a statement, the service said: “His efforts are a testament to the dedication of our crews and the camaraderie between our colleagues.

“It’s fitting that Matt has chosen to take on this challenge – and to invite his fellow firefighters to join him – during our 75th year.”
