A small patch of furze close to the Fort caught alight amidst the Christmas light switch-on ceremony and parade.

The Fire Service were alerted to the flames at around 19:20 yesterday evening, but by the time they arrived, they were informed that the fire had already been extinguished by firework display operatives nearby.

It is not clear yet what exactly caused the fire, but there were multiple firework displays happening around the area to mark the beginning of the Christmas shopping season.

As a precautionary measure, firefighters dampened down the small area of furze that had caught alight above the Fort Regent carpark.
