Islanders will be able to have their electric blankets tested for free next week as part of an annual safety event.
The States of Jersey Fire and Rescue Service will provide the free testing in partnership with Jersey Electricity.
Checks will be carried out by electrical engineers and fire and rescue officers to ensure heated blankets are safe and do not pose a fire risk.
Islanders can bring their electric blankets to either of these two sessions at the Western Fire Station in St Brelade:
- Tuesday 14 October from 10:00 to 15:00
- Wednesday 15 October from 10:00 to 15:00
Islanders can also drop off their blankets at Jersey Fire HQ, Rouge Bouillon by 17:00 on Monday 13 October.
Each blanket must be labelled with a name, address and a contact number for a safe return to the owner.
A Powerhouse 10% discount voucher will be given in return for electric blankets over 10 years old and unfit for use.
Fire Safety Watch Commander Toby Aubert said: “As the colder weather sets in, we remind everyone to use electric blankets safely to prevent electrical fires.
“Always buy new, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, and check for damage before use. Never use them damp, folded, or with a hot water bottle.
“How electrical blankets are stored and ensuring they are not plugged into overloaded sockets is also very important.
“Faulty or misused electric blankets can cause fires, but by following these guidelines, you can enjoy the warmth of your electric blanket while minimising the risk of fire.
“Let’s stay warm and safe this winter.”
