A holidaymaker caught on camera cruising along the Greve d’Azette shoreline in a luxury SUV on Sunday in a video that gained thousands of views – and scores of disapproving comments – appears to have apologised for their actions.
In footage widely circulated on Facebook on 6 April, a black G-wagon with a UK registration plate can be seen speeding through the surf in close proximity to a member of the public walking nearby.
The post accompanying the video refers to the motorist “driving between people on the beach” and “going relatively quick”.
The Highway Code states that it is illegal for a person to drive a vehicle on the beach without written permission previously obtained from the Economic Development Minister.
An anonymous poster claiming to be the driver took to Facebook to apologise for their actions and ask for forgiveness.
They wrote: “I am the owner of the G wagon that created some commotion on the beach the other day.
“I wasn’t aware about the rules and I must have missed your sign, I respect your beautiful island and sometimes in life you gotta [sic] hold your hands up and apologise.”
The Facebook user said they weren’t drunk and hadn’t been apprehended by police, but said it was “common decency to apologise to locals”.
They added: “You see these things on Top Gear and you think wouldn’t it be cool if I do it once myself.”
States of Jersey Police told Express that the driver was reported after the video gained significant traction on social media, and subsequently intercepted by the authorities at the harbour.
It’s understood that “words of advice were provided” to the G-wagon owner by officers, who linked up with the Customs and police force in the UK.
