Blockbuster and Liquid Nightclub are finally set to disappear from the Google Street View of Jersey as the 16-year-old imagery receives a long-overdue update.
The platform still shows footage captured in 2010, allowing users to revisit former landmarks including Chicago Rock and the former Pontins holiday camp.
However, local start-up Island View has now received funding to capture new imagery, which it will provide to Google for upload.
Tony Moretta, chief executive of Digital Jersey, said there would be “a range” of benefits to having up-to-date footage of Jersey’s streets.
“In 2026, it is not a good idea having Google Street View out of date,” he said.
“People use Google Maps to navigate and get around – I think it is good for businesses, for people who are new to the Island.”
The imagery will also be used to map mobile-phone coverage, showing how well operators’ 4G and 5G services perform in different locations.
The project is also set to record “point clouds” to create 3D imagery of buildings, which could help developers and planners.
Mr Moretta said: “We had a number of reactions from architects, from Andium, JDC, saying this data is going to be very useful for us.”
He added that having data covering the entire Island “will possibly put us ahead” internationally.
The project received almost £487,000 from Impact Jersey, a government-funded initiative created to benefit the Island.
Islanders should expect to see a van fitted with Island View’s recording equipment travelling around Jersey to capture the footage.
But those who enjoy stepping back in time need not panic. Where Google has imagery from several dates, users can move between them by clicking the “See more dates” button.
