A structure fire at West Hill that saw the evacuation of an adjacent residential block at the weekend was likely caused by “carelessly discarded materials”, it has emerged – prompting a safety reminder from the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service.
Three fire engines and 18 firefighters were needed during the height of the blaze at Pomme D’Or Farm on Sunday night.
The fire had taken hold of the refuse area in a building housing an electrical power station and storage, and had started to spread to the roof.
Residents of an adjacent four-storey apartment block were evacuated as a precaution, while the situation was brought under control.
Further investigation into the incident has found the most likely cause of the fire was from “carelessly discarded materials”, such as smoking or disposable BBQs.
Station Commander Ryan Hall said: “The Jersey Fire and Rescue Service would like to remind members of the public about the consequences of carelessly discarding hot materials in bins.
“All burning materials must be fully extinguished and cool before their disposal.”
