Islanders will be able to fly directly to Italy next summer with the launch of a new route between Jersey and Sardinia.

Weekly Saturday flights to Olbia in Sardinia will mark the first time that FlyDirect has offered holidays to Italy.

The flights to the main gateway to the Costa Smeralda will operate from 22 May to 14 August as part of the travel company’s summer 2027 programme.

FlyDirect described Sardinia as an island of “striking natural beauty, rich history and unique cultural identity”, combining mountains, beaches and ancient traditions.

The new service is among five routes to Mediterranean and Portuguese destinations being offered from Jersey between April and October next year.

Weekly flights will also operate to returning destinations Majorca, Ibiza, Faro and Malaga.

Alexander Devlin, Director of FlyDirect’s parent company C. I. Travel Group, said: “Sardinia is the first time we have offered holidays to Italy, and we are extremely excited about this stunning new destination in the Mediterranean.”

He added that Jersey residents had “long appreciated the convenience” of avoiding travel through a UK airport or an overnight stay before reaching their destination.

“With financially protected flights and holiday packages, we take the stress out of booking a holiday,” Mr Devlin said.

“We have also personally reviewed our destinations, accommodation and facilities, which means we can give honest feedback and advice.”

Paul Holley, Head of Connectivity at Ports of Jersey, said the new programme would provide direct flights to five “outstanding sunshine destinations”.

“Alongside popular returning favourites in Spain and Portugal, the addition of Sardinia provides an exciting new Italian option for Islanders planning next year’s break,” he added.

FlyDirect has also brought back child discounts of between £50 and £200 per child on every flight, which were introduced last year in recognition of the high cost of family holidays.

Group discounts will be available for larger parties, including those travelling during the school summer holidays, while the company said it was offering a wider range of hotels to suit different budgets.

All flights will be operated by BA CityFlyer using Embraer 190 jets with a two-by-two seating arrangement. Fares include 20kg of hold luggage and 10kg of cabin baggage.

The programme begins with a flight to Malaga on 10 April and ends with services returning from the Algarve and Malaga on 30 October.

Flights and holidays went on sale on Wednesday 23 September.
