Islanders are being warned that urinating in public could lead to a £250 fine.

The St Helier Honorary Police issued the warning over the weekend, urging those enjoying the town’s nightlife to use the available public toilets that are open 24 hours a day.

In a statement shared on social media, the force said: “It’s not just men – ladies can also find themselves caught short – but there’s no excuse! St Helier has multiple public toilets open 24/7, all FREE to use.

“We urge everyone to plan ahead and use a toilet before leaving a pub, club, restaurant, or other venue.”

In response to the social media post, islanders took to the comments to question the cleanliness and accessibility of public toilets in St Helier.

One Facebook commenter shared their experience attempting to locate an open public toilet at nighttime due to medical issues.

They said: “I’ve been on a walk late at night and three to four different toilets have been locked.”

Some commenters argued that authorities should focus on tackling vandalism and improving “broken” and “disgusting” facilities rather than issuing fines.
