Staff have now appeal to islanders describing an “urgent need of hazelnuts (still in shell)” to feed the pair.
“We normally purchase locally, but unfortunately there is an island shortage and the shops are not sure when stock will next arrive,” the team explained.
Islanders can order some nut online through the JSPCA’s Amazon Wishlist or drop any nuts they have at the Shelter.
Some have already pledged their support by ordering up to 6kg of the nutty treats or placing orders.
The JSPCA regularly looks after squirrels. Young individuals sometimes need care for up to six weeks or longer and require bottle feeding.

Two years ago, the team hand-reared a little fur ball known as “Baby” whom they rescued at just three weeks old, when she weighed just 56g, after her mother died.
The squirrels have a handful of nuts a few times a day. A spokesperson explained: “The nuts have to be shelled, as the last process for the squirrel is to be able to break into the nuts and for us to monitor for evidence of teeth marks.”
