A seven-year-old islander is due to host a Lego-building competition later this month to raise funds for a local food and nutrition charity.

Caring Cooks is dedicated to tackling food poverty in Jersey, and ensuring that no child or family goes hungry.

As the charity’s unofficial youngest ambassador, Ophelia Goldsborough has previously raised funds by collecting and reselling pre-loved and unwanted children’s gifts, as well as donating her birthday money last year.

Her latest fundraising event is a Lego Challenge, which is due to take place at 11:00 on Saturday 19 April at Colleen’s Café in Grève de Lecq.

Parents are encouraged to bring their children along to take part, with creations due to be judged by Ophelia herself.

Entries will be judged on creativity and inventiveness – with prizes due to be awarded to the top three Lego builders.

The young fundraiser is hoping to raise extra money for Caring Cooks by selling homemade items such as phone stick-ons, bracelets, bag tags and key rings.

Ophelia’s mum Denise Heavey said: “She’s organised the whole event herself, down to the poster design and is also making and selling items like keyrings, bracelets, and bag-tags to raise extra funds.

“It’s a really sweet example of a young person taking the lead to support a local charity.”
