Michael Bartolomiej Dorynek was charged yesterday morning with four offences relating to the St. Brelade’s Bay crash on 9 July last year, which saw a speedboat plough into the side of a jet ski carrying Advocate Giles Corbin (45) and one other passenger.
Advocate Giles Corbin (45) was airlifted for emergency treatment at Southampton Hospital following the incident, and remained in the UK at a specialist unit in Salisbury for many weeks to undergo several surgeries – including skin grafts – to mend his severely damaged limbs. Islanders sent their well wishes to Mr Corbin, who they hoped would have a speedy recovery. Mr Corbin returned to the island in August, and reported that he was making good progress.
The driver of the speedboat, who was 36 at the time, was arrested for alleged reckless driving under Regulation 38 Boat and Surf-riding (Control) (Jersey) Regulations 1969. He was placed on police bail, while the Harbour Authority and Police continued their investigations.
Police officially charged Mr Dorynek yesterday morning with grave and criminal assault, operating a vessel recklessly or dangerously, owning and mastering a “dangerously unsafe ship”, and failing to report an incident to the Harbour Master.
He will appear in the Magistrate’s Court this morning.
