The RNLI is warning islanders not to swim past 6pm over the next couple of days due to “strong rip currents” caused by the changing tides as a result of tonight’s eclipse.
A rare partial solar eclipse will take place this evening, with the moon due to cover around 94% of the sun.
The RNLI says that this will increase the swell and large pushing tides and is asking islanders who may be considering a post-work dip in the sea to “please be aware” of the strong rip currents – particularly across St Ouen’s Bay.
If islanders do find themselves caught in a riptide, the charity advises people not to try and swim against it as it will quickly cause exhaustion and, if possible, wade or swim parallel to the shore until out of the riptide and head for the shore
The charity also said that islanders should always raise their hand and shout for help.
Help…
Islanders witnessing or involved with situations like this can call 999 or 112 and ask for the Jersey Coastguard to get help.
