The States Vet, Linda Lowseck, says that dogs should be kept on a leash around any livestock, including poultry.

The one-year-old sheep – Bercail Gallant – that was attacked was badly hurt in the meadow at Beauport at around 8 am yesterday, but the Environment department say that they hope she will make a full recovery.

Four other sheep were attacked and injured at the same time.

In a statement, the States Vet says that the majority of dog owners are responsible and careful with their animals, but that some dogs – even those that are normally calm and obedient – will sometimes chase livestock.

Aside from injuries if a dog attacks, the shock of being chased can lead to ewes aborting, and young lambs can become separated from their mother during the critical early bonding stage.

The owners of the sheep say that expert veterinary care has given her a shot at pulling through.

A video of the sheep, including the injuries is below, but be warned, the content is graphic.
