A short film shot entirely in Jersey is aiming to raise awareness around dementia and the often-overlooked experiences of carers who support their loved ones through the condition.

Quicksand, which stars British actors Deborah Cornelius and Clive Mantle, follows the story of Cecilia.

The character is learning to live differently as she steps into the role of carer for her husband Albert, who has been diagnosed with young-onset Alzheimer’s disease.

Directed by award-winning Jersey filmmaker Rebecca Coley, the film was co-written by Jessica Garton and Ted Walliker – who also appear on screen as the younger versions of the lead characters.

Former JCG student Jessica said the film was inspired by her own grandparents and the adjustments they made while navigating a dementia diagnosis together.

In a joint statement, the co-writers said: “We are deeply grateful to our incredibly talented cast, crew, and supporters of our debut short film.

“We hope Quicksand sparks important conversations and encourages people to reach out to friends, neighbours, or local charities for support when needed.”

The team behind Quicksand said they hoped the film would challenge the stigma that still surrounds dementia and offer reassurance to carers that they are not alone.

It has been made in association with Dementia Jersey.

Speaking about the film, Dementia Jersey said: “We are confident that this short film will not only raise awareness of dementia but also touch the hearts of many, both in Jersey and beyond.

“We look forward to the release of the short film and seeing the impact it will make within our community.”

Deborah Cornelius – who has been seen in Mr Selfridge, Silent Witness and Temple – plays the central character of Cecilia.

She described the project as a “healing” experience, coming just months after the death of her husband, composer and lyricist Steve Brown.

Deborah said: “Working with Clive [Mantle] was like we had always been there together, it was seamless and the project was healing to explore the depths on the back of my husband passing only months before.”

The film’s soundtrack includes her husband’s song ‘I Wrote This For You’, which the team said they “felt privileged” to feature as a tribute.

Clive Mantle – who has starred in Game of Thrones, Casualty and Robin of Sherwood – plays Albert.

“I was thrilled that Deborah recommended me,” he said.

“With only three shooting days, it was vital to hit the ground running, and having that existing trust was a fantastic advantage.

“She is a glorious performer and breaks your heart with her instinctive and exquisite choices.”

Jersey director Rebecca Coley described working with the lead actors as “like watching a masterclass”.

She added that Deborah “brought a rawness and emotional depth to the film that is hard to put into words”.

The film is being supported by ArtHouse Jersey through its Development Grant, as well as Music in Action and Soroptimist International Jersey.
