A seabird initially mistaken for a penguin on social media is now recovering safely under the care of the JSPCA.
The bird, identified as a guillemot, drew attention online after appearing “out of place,” with many islanders noting its penguin-like appearance.
While guillemots share similar colouring and upright posture, they are native to local shores and are strong fliers – unlike penguins.
Staff at the animal shelter confirmed the bird is now in their care, where it is receiving rest and support following its rescue.
The JSPCA said its team is focused on ensuring the animal makes a full recovery.
Islanders can support the local charity in caring for injured or displaced wildlife by purchasing something from its Amazon wishlist or donating directly to the JSCPA.
